This small school is consistently ranked among the nation's best liberal arts colleges. Its graduates include Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas '20 and Walter Brattain '24, co-inventor of the transistor who shared a Nobel Prize in Physics. Whitman was the first college in the US to institute comprehensive oral exams as a requirement for graduation.
