All these photographs were made for Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. This small school is consistently ranked among the nation's best liberal arts colleges. Its graduates include Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas '20 and Walter Brattain '24, co-inventor of the transistor who shared a Nobel Prize in Physics. Whitman was the first college in the US to institute comprehensive oral exams as a requirement for graduation.
Whitman does not have a football team but in 2005 it boasted both the number-one rated debate team and the National Champion Division II (15,000 students or fewer) cycling team.
